Hemp company raising funds to mass-produce plastic pellets made from agricultural waste

The Canadian Industrial Hemp Corporation (CIHC) is raising capital to build a facility capable of converting hemp and flax fibres into bioplastics.

Earlier this year, the company completed testing protocols for a technology that allows plant fibres to be injection-moulded.

“For the first time, there is an opportunity to replicate in North America what is already being done successfully in Europe: using agricultural waste to make plastic products,” Ziner told HempToday.

The capital raised will fund a 60,000-sq.-ft manufacturing and distribution centre in Alberta, capable of processing 50,000 tonnes of stalk, per Hemp Gazette.

CIHC has also received $10 million in repayable funds from the federal government to build out the Alberta facility.
