Israel Defense Forces looking to crack down on cannabis consumption among soldiers

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are cracking down on the consumption of cannabis and other drugs within its ranks, according to an announcement made early Monday.

One of the harshest new rules for soldiers convicted of consuming or possessing banned substances is a denial of benefits for soldiers in combat, as well as loss of the demobilization grants awarded to each soldier upon completion of service (military service is compulsory for male and female citizens over the age of 18), per Jerusalem Post. The rules will apply whether the troops are in or out of uniform.

Israel partially decriminalized cannabis several years ago, according to Haaretz, but that doesn’t mean military rules have eased.
