National panel study finds U.S. college-aged adults consuming more cannabis, hallucinogens, less alcohol

In a summary of the study, the NIH highlighted a few findings. Among them, annual cannabis use has remained consistent in young adults not enrolled in college at 43 per cent, the same levels recorded in 2018 and 2019, and increased in college students.

About 44 per cent of students reported consuming cannabis in the past year, compared to 38 per cent in 2015. The NIH summary notes that similar increases in cannabis use have not been observed among 12th graders.

Meanwhile, after years of increasing use, vaping rates dropped in 2020. From 2017 to 2019, the percentage of college-aged adults who reported vaping cannabis in the past 30 days jumped from five per cent to 14 per cent for college students, and eight per cent to 17 per cent for non-college respondents.
