Nebraska State Senator Champions for a November Marijuana Ballot

medical marijuana ballot

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana ballot is creating a petition to make Nebraska the 34th state to legalize the use of medical marijuana. According to the group, it may take 160,000 to 180,000 signatures by July to get the petition on the ballot.

Patricia Petersen, Volunteer for Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, said that she already has overwhelming feedback from Nebraskans:

“Generally very positive. Most of them are quite excited to sign. I’ve had a few people who their mind is closed, and they will never open it.”

Sen. Anna Wishart, Co-chair of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, added that this policy makes a lot of sense much more than anything else that she has ever done.

“What we’ve seen with polling is resoundingly over 70% of Nebraskans across the state. Across demographics, across age groups, rural and urban support legalizing access to medical marijuana.”

The Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana group is working with two distinct groups to get this slogan on the ballot: ADOPT and 1st Tuesday Campaigns.

Tom Garrett leads the ADOPT campaign. Garrett was pushing for the legalization of medical marijuana while he was a state senator. 1st Tuesday Campaigns is a renowned national strategy and consulting firm that is hired particularly to pass petitions. Senator Wishart said:

“We’ve hired a company that has a 100% success rate. Of qualifying the signature initiatives.”

Gov. Pete Ricketts is among the people who are opposing the legalization of medical marijuana in Nebraska. He said that he wants the electorate to realize that weed is harmful to people’s health. He commented:

“When voters hear the truth about this. They’ll have the voice to say ‘no’ to legalizing something dangerous.”

He also stated that marijuana and tobacco industries are the ones that are wholly to blame for medical marijuana, probably coming to Nebraska. Gov. Ricketts concluded:

“This is a bunch of outside money that big industry is trying to avoid regulations.”

Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana members said that all petitions must be signed physically. The group has at least 70 locations spread across Nebraska, ready for service.
