Official concerned about “Krispy Kreme” effect when cannabis stores get going in New Mexico

Potential pot shops and cannabis enthusiasts alike in New Mexico are waiting impatiently for legal cannabis sales to kick off in April, but one official is warning that the state could run out of weed shortly after sales begin.

The superintendent anticipates the state will need a half-million plants to sate residents’ expected appetite for buying legal weed, according to data gleaned from states that have already legalized the drug. New Mexico legalized adult-use cannabis in April 2021, although medical cannabis has been legal since 2007.

In an attempt to get ahead of any potential shortages, the Cannabis Control Division has more than doubled its previously determined cultivation cap, increasing the number of permissible plants from 4,500 to 10,000, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported earlier this month.

But the number of plants is not the only potential headache in the state.
