Researchers at the University of California San Diego are launching a new placebo-controlled study to determine how cannabis affects migraines.
Dr. Nathaniel Schuster, lead researcher on the project, told KGTV that it is the first known randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial looking at cannabis as a potentially effective treatment for acute migraines.
“We want to know whether it is more effective than placebo, whether it is beneficial for the headache part of migraine, whether it’s helpful for the other parts of migraine,” Schuster said.
Getting the necessary approvals for the study took several years, he said, noting that the government will be supplying the medical-grade cannabis.
It’s not clear if the cannabis will be coming from the much-maligned University of Mississippi supply, or from one of the other recently approved growers.
