A hemp farm in South Carolina was robbed of 315 pounds (143 kilograms) of packaged hemp valued at US$157,500 ($199,500) earlier this week, reports the Times and Democrat.
In fact, even law enforcement struggles to tell the difference.
Last year, police in Texas proudly took to social media to share how they’d seized 3,000 pounds of pot from a rented U-Haul truck. The driver, Aneudy Gonzalez, was jailed for a month before the felony drug possession charge was dropped as a result of the plants being hemp, and perfectly legal.
“Today we beat the feds,” Daniel Mehler, Gonzalez’s lawyer, said in a statement. “We maintained from the word ‘go’ that all he had was hemp, and this morning, the U.S. government moved to dismiss the charges against our client.”
Mehler added that they would be seeking compensation as a result of Gonzalez
