Democratic senators urging President Joe Biden to issue blanket cannabis pardons

With the vast majority of U.S. citizens supporting some form of cannabis legalization, it is now time for U.S. President Joe Biden to ensure weed offenders for federal, non-violent crimes are pardoned.

It is a similar message to the one delivered last month to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. In that letter, Warren and Senator Cory Booker argued that Garland should use his authority to have the Department of Justice remove cannabis from the federal controlled substances list.

In the new letter, though, Markey, Warren and Merkley maintain that beyond the ongoing injustice, the country’s current federal policies around cannabis are decidedly out of step with the American public.

They cite a recent national poll that found 69 per cent of respondents in general, and 70 per cent of registered voters, believe cannabis should be made legal.
