A 47-year-old year man in the Isle of Man will see his wages deducted until he pays off approximately $230 for possessing less than a gram of cannabis.
The court ordered that, once he completes paying a previous fine, his pay be deducted at a rate of about $31 per week until the most recent fine is cleared.
While recreational cannabis remains illegal in the IOM, the government introduced a regulatory framework to allow commercial operators to grow, manufacture, distribute and export medical cannabis products last year.
In 2021, a 63-year-old Maltese man was finally sentenced after being charged with cultivating 0.02 grams of cannabis in 2001.
After a 20-year wait, the man was handed a one-year suspended sentence for the six month’s imprisonment and was ordered to pay a $684 fine, the minimum sentence for cultivating cannabis.
