NJ governor signs bill removing hemp-derived products from stores

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill Thursday that will regulate products containing intoxicating levels of hemp-derived cannabinoids under state law.

Retailers currently selling drinks or gummies with hemp-derived delta-8 or delta-9 THC must pull them from store shelves, according to the Asbury Park Press.

“The status quo poses an immediate risk to health and safety, as these unregulated intoxicating hemp products are widely available to minors,” Murphy told news outlets.

The new law will put intoxicating hemp products under the purview of the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission, according to NJ.com, and requires any seller to obtain a cannabis sales permit from the regulatory agency.

State-licensed liquor stores will be permitted to sell intoxicating hemp beverages under the new law, but not until rules are finalized by the Cannabis Regulatory Commission and the Division of Alcohol Beverage Control.
