Most Americans Support Supreme Court Decision Upholding Marijuana Users’ Gun Rights, Poll Shows

Most Americans agree with the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold the gun rights of people who use marijuana—and that includes majority support across party lines—according to a new poll

Earlier this month, the nine justices unanimously ruled that the government’s efforts to criminalize possession of firearms for cannabis consumers is an unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment.

The new survey conducted on Friday by YouGov found that 55 percent of U.S. adults either strongly or somewhat approve of the ruling, which was described to respondents as determining that “people who occasionally use marijuana cannot automatically be banned from owning a firearm solely because of their marijuana use.”

Just 26 percent disagree with the decision.

Among Republicans, support for the court’s ruling on cannabis consumers’ gun rights stands at 58 percent. Fifty-two percent of Democrats approve, as do 56 percent of independents.
