The National Football League and the NFL Players Association are offering US$1 million ($1.2 million) in grants to fund research into alternatives to opioids for pain management.
The pain management committee announced the funding, which will be doled out in up to five separate grants, on Tuesday.
Cannabis will be a central focus of the research.
In February, the NFL and NFLPA issued a request for more information regarding pain management alternatives to opioids, including CBD.
Kevin Hill, co-chairman of the joint committee on pain management between the players’ association and the league, as well as director of addiction psychiatry at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, underscored the need for more data about the efficacy and safety of cannabis as a pain management tool on a media call Tuesday.
