‘Undeterred,’ AOC again introduces amendment to facilitate psychedelics research

Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making moves in a bid to dismantle obstacles in federal research regulations that she hopes will expand study into the medical potential of currently prohibited substances such as psilocybin and MDMA.

“It is ridiculous that Congress upholds War on Drugs-era barriers on federal research into substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, & MDMA when early results are indicating major promise in treating PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), addiction, & more. I’m trying (again) to lift them so we can pursue the science,” the congresswoman tweeted Thursday.

It’s not the first time Ocasio-Cortez has tried to make it easier for researchers to study psychedelics and other drugs. Her efforts to get a similar amendment passed in 2019, however, were rejected by the House, garnering just 22 per cent support when brought to a vote.
