Cannabis Drinks Help People Consume Less Alcohol While Improving Sleep And Mood, Study Finds

Most people who consume cannabis beverages end up drinking less alcohol— and see improved sleep, less stress and reduced pain, according to the results of a new study.

The results come as Congress is considering whether to allow a currently scheduled ban on hemp THC products to take effect as scheduled in November or to extend the deadline to give lawmakers more time to craft regulations as an alternative to prohibition.

The research firm MoreBetter tested 36 different cannabis-infused drinks for the study, which involved 4,516 people who filled out self-report surveys each day for a period of three weeks.

Two-thirds of participants (65 percent) said they drank less alcohol during the research period while they were consuming THC beverages.

Fifty-six percent said they would consider using cannabis drinks “as a regular replacement for alcohol,” 53 percent reported a decreased craving for alcohol and 47 percent said they now prefer the THC beverage they tested over their usual alcoholic drink.

Participants also rated cannabis drinks as safer than alcohol—both with respect to health (87 percent) and socially (75 percent).
