Cannabis retailer has northern roots

The owners of the newest cannabis store in North Bay, Ont. stress that they’re a small business, not a corporation.

“The biggest thing we want people to know is that we are a small business,” says Tom Laronde, who along with Steve Beaudry and John Shelegey, own and operate Cannabis Jacks at 1881 Cassells St. in North Bay, Timmins and Val Caron.

“It’s about the guest experience,” Shelegey says. “We are part of the community.”

The partners, along with founder Mike Birch from Sault Ste. Marie, are all former restaurant people. Birch owned a dozen Tim Hortons, while Laronde, Beaudry and Shelegey owned five Subway restaurants and three Freshii stores in the city.

In fact, “90 per cent of our staff here is from Subways” that the trio owned and operated, Laronde says.
