Carney agrees to keep B.C. tanker ban, as Alberta expected to propose southerly pipeline route

Carney declined to confirm whether maintaining the federal oil tanker ban signalled that Alberta would be pursuing a southern route, as opposed to the northern option that Smith had initially said she favoured, given its closer proximity to Asian markets. Prince Rupert, B.C. is about 1,500 km closer to Asian destinations and a port there would likely also face less congestion than in the busy waterways around Vancouver.
