Finally, on Friday, Carney announced a plan to restore 24 Sussex Drive, the dilapidated, once rat-infested official residence for the prime minister that hasn’t been occupied in over a decade. The plan involves holding a design competition, but it also involves a national fundraising campaign, which confuses priorities. It is very clearly a public project that should be funded entirely through public funds, rather than private donations.
