D’oh! Police accidentally donate weed evidence to Christian charity

Mixup may not be sufficient to describe a big mistake in which the Berthold Police in North Dakota accidentally exchanged cannabis evidence meant for disposal with a donation to the Dakota Boys and Girl Ranch.

The sheriff’s department investigated and returned the items from a recently closed case to the police. The weed and other evidence were subsequently destroyed, as per the original plan.

While medicinal marijuana is legal in North Dakota, recreational cannabis is not. O’Keefe, O’Brien and Lyson Attorneys report penalties for possessing cannabis will vary by amount. “Usually, anything less than one ounce (28 grams) is considered a B misdemeanor with a maximum fine of US$1,500 and up to 30 days in jail.” Over that amount becomes a felony-level offence.

For selling any amount of cannabis, though, the felony charge could lead to three to 10 years in prison
