Kamala Harris has received a scathing attack from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, hardly a month after Joe Biden picked her as vice president.
A “horrible prosecutor”
Speaking to a police union in Bedminster, New Jersey, last Friday, Giuliani described Harris as a “horrible prosecutor” and a “bully” who arrested thousands of cannabis smokers for petty offences. Giuliani was addressing the New York City Police Benevolent Association (PBA), which supports President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
In his speech, the former NYC Mayor mocked Kamala Harris, accusing her of preaching water and drinking wine. Giuliani said that during Harris’ stint as attorney general of California, she arrested thousands of people for smoking weed while she smoked the same.
Harris became a district attorney of San Francisco in 2003 before she was elected attorney general of California in 2010 and 2014. According to Giuliani, Harris prosecuted minor offenders in marijuana-related cases but failed to go for the state’s “rich and powerful.”
Going for “little people”
“Kamala Harris went after 1,500 marijuana smokers – marijuana smokers, not people selling it – smokers. And then when she was asked if she smoked marijuana, she went ‘haha yea.’ Tell me this isn’t a horrible person. All the politicians in San Francisco, all of [former Mayor] Willie Brown’s friends, they went free, but she went after marijuana smokers,” Giuliani said last Friday at the podium as he imitated someone smoking marijuana as Trump stood behind him.
Giuliani was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1983 and 1989. While he kept referring to Harris as a “horrible prosecutor,” Giuliani praised President Trump, touting him for wanting to defend police officers across the country. Referring to the President, Giuliani said, “We need him more than he needs us.”
Previously, Harris had been criticized for her stand on cannabis. During her Democratic presidential primary run in 2019, she was condemned for administering a wide range of convictions related to misdemeanour crimes when she was a prosecutor.
However, the former California Senator has since changed her position on cannabis. In an interesting twist, Giuliani’s daughter, Caroline, is supporting the Biden Harris ticket. Last week, she tweeted out a picture of her and Harris standing together.
On his part, Giuliani last week shared a National Review piece entitled “Joe Biden has named his 2020 running mate: authoritarianism.” And in his Wednesday tweet, Giuliani quoted author Kevin Williamson: “American prosecutors wield awesome and terrible powers that lend themselves easily to abuse, and Senator Kamala Harris, formerly the attorney general of California, is an enthusiastic abuser of them.”
