GOP Pennsylvania Senator Says Legalization Is ‘The Most Conservative’ Approach To Marijuana As He Finalizes Reform Bill

A Republican Pennsylvania senator is defending the push to legalize and regulate marijuana, calling it “the most conservative stance” on the issue.

In an interview with CBS 21 News that aired on Sunday, Sen. Dan Laughlin (R) talked about his efforts to end prohibition in the state, which would be achieved through a forthcoming bill he’s sponsoring alongside Sen. Sharif Street (D).

Laughlin said that expanding the state’s current medical marijuana law to allow for regulated adult-use sales “is simply kind of wrapping the paperwork up, if you will.”

“We already have a pretty thriving cannabis industry in Pennsylvania through our medical program. And quite frankly, if we’re honest with ourselves, we have a thriving black market right now too,” he said. “So from my standpoint, getting this bill passed— legislating it, taxing it, and putting it in a clean, safe environment that is regulated—seems like actually the most conservative stance on it.”
