Grandma spends the night in jail for growing one cannabis plant

A 70-year-old woman and her 48-year-old relative spent a night in jail after they were arrested for growing one cannabis plant each in northeast Thailand.

Home growers must be using the plant for medical purposes and Thailand’s food and drug regulator chief has said previously that there would be random inspections.

Those who grow without notifying the government face a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or about $750, while those who sell cannabis without a license could face up to three years in jail and a 300,00 ($11,200) baht fine.

The 70-year-old woman reportedly told police that she uses the plants, which were sprouting from a garden in front of her home, for medical purposes, including boiling the leaves for tea. The woman reportedly hadn’t sought permission to grow the plant.
