A federal study had found that when ranchers fed cows hemp, they spent more time lying down and had lower levels of stress hormones. This could prove beneficial to ranchers because relaxed steers tend to be healthier.
Kansas State University researchers stated that hemp could be a natural way to decrease stress-related respiratory infections and other ailments when cattle are transported or weaned off their mothers.
Mike Kleinhenz, assistant professor of beef production medicine at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine, recently published the study results in Scientific Reports.
“We might have a more natural way to reduce stress in cattle,” he said. “And we’re just starting to scratch the surface on some of the benefits.”
