Italy to hold referendum on decriminalizing cannabis after 500,000 sign petition in a week

Italy will hold a popular referendum after half a million people and counting signed a petition to decriminalize cannabis.

The campaign behind the petition will continue to push for signatures before the end-of-month deadline to ensure it stands up to the scrutiny of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest court of Italy, reports Agenzia Giornialistica Italia.

“Legalizing does not mean promoting consumption, but making it safer and more informed,” said advocates behind the campaign, per CNN. “If cannabis were legal, it would put an end to unnecessary trials for small amounts of the drug and ensure that patients who use it to relieve their excruciating pain will never have to face a court again,” they added.
