Kamala Harris says ‘nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed’ despite her AG record

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers a few days after U.S. President Joe Biden granted pardons to those convicted of simple cannabis possession, Vice President Kamala Harris declared, “Nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed.”

Meyers declined to question Harris about her record as attorney general of California from 2011 to 2016, when more than 1,500 people were sent to state prisons for cannabis-related offences.

A few weeks out from the midterm elections, Harris also reminded viewers to ask candidates where they stand on cannabis reform and to “vote accordingly.”

“Ultimately, though, as with so many issues, if Congress acts, then there is a uniform approach to this and so many other issues. But Congress needs to act,” Harris added.

In a Presidential proclamation issued last week, Biden declared “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all current United States citizens
