Lawyer successfully argues newly eased penalties in Dubai should apply for woman caught with cannabis at airport

A 39-year-old South American woman found with 61 grams of cannabis was reportedly cleared of drug charges that previously could have landed her in prison.

The weed was discovered on the first-time offender after she arrived at Dubai International Airport this past April, according to Khaleej Times. A search of her luggage revealed the cannabis.

Recently appearing in Dubai Criminal Court, per Khaleej Times, the woman was acquitted after her counsel argued that the amount of drugs involved indicated it was for personal use. He also maintained the new rules should apply given that she was a first-time offender.

If prosecutors want to appeal the verdict, they have about another week to do so.

Visitors to Dubai have not traditionally been anywhere near as fortunate.
