A 44-year-old U.K. man who says he self-medicates with homemade cannabis oil to treat his cancer symptoms was in court this week facing possession charges.
The man was prescribed painkillers, but said the side effects were severe. He found cannabis to be a suitable alternative. The court also heard that the man had two previous convictions for cannabis possession.
He was handed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £145 ($247) in prosecution costs.
“It’s accepted the purpose of your acquiring this cannabis was to convert it into oil, with which you obtain a way of self-medicating,” the judge said, per Gazette News . “You found it helps, but you do so knowing it is against the law.”
Under U.K. law, cannabis remains a Class B drug. Medical cannabis is legal, but patients say access remains difficult.
