Constrained, noisy and altogether uncomfortable, an Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exam is a dreaded procedure for most patients.
But a new clinical trial has found that a small dose of psilocybin, or magic mushrooms, can make the experience ‘magical’ and ‘joyous.’
The trial involves healthy adults aged between 18 and 55 who twice underwent MRI and Electroencephalography (EEG) exams. On the second visit, participants were administered a small dose (19 mg) of psilocybin and researchers used scans to monitor the electrical activity of the participants’ brains following the dose.
Previous research has found that MRI exams present a greater challenge than standard scans due to factors like the enclosed space, noise and scan duration. A study slated to publish next month in Academic Radiology recently found that efforts to reduce acoustic noise during exams “significantly contributes to increased patient comfort.”
For one of the trials 60 volunteers,
