New Mexico Bill To Create Psilocybin Therapy Program Heads To Governor’s Desk Following Lawmakers’ Approval

The New Mexico House of Representatives has approved a Senate-passed bill to establish a therapeutic psilocybin program in the state.

The legislation from Sen. Jeff Steinborn (D), which passed the full Senate last week and cleared a House committee on Monday, advanced on the House floor in a 56-8 vote on Tuesday. It now heads to the governor.

If signed into law, the Medical Psilocybin Act would allow patients with certain qualifying conditions to access the psychedelic and use it under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.

Ahead of the vote, Rep. Stefani Lord (R) spoke about “how well this works with PTSD, OCD, drug addiction [and] depression.”

“There’s many different ways that this medication will help people,” she said.

Rep. Andrea Romero (D) said the new law would put “New Mexico on the map as essentially one of the first and best in care when it comes to PTSD, anxiety and really at the cutting edge of all the opportunities that we have to treat some of the most difficult long-term interests that we see within our veterans communities, with those who have carried everything from trauma to great tragedy.”

“This is an incredible opportunity for us,” she said.
