Though recreational cannabis is now legal in New York state, bureaucratic delays have stalled the launch of sales.
Alexander added that the state is “building a legal, regulated cannabis market that will ensure products are tested and safe for consumers while providing opportunities for those from communities most impacted by the over-criminalization of the cannabis prohibition, and illegal operations undermine our ability to do that.”
Currently, no adult-use licences have been issued in the state, and the only way to obtain tested cannabis products is through the state’s medical program.
Earlier this week, the City of Ithaca followed up on the OCM letter by issuing a statement warning businesses that selling a product or service to consumers, and providing cannabis as a “gift,” constitutes illegal activity and the city will be reporting unlicensed cannabis sales to the OCM.
