The college has acquired a licence from Health Canada to cultivate industrial hemp and production is already underway, the school has announced.
Students grew a small crop in the college’s hop yard this summer, an experience that taught them about growing hemp transplants from seed, germination rates, plant maintenance and hemp flower identification.
The applications of industrial hemp are nearly endless, from housing to biofuels and novel foods, among other uses.
Increasingly, industrial hemp is being grown as a source of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating cannabinoid derived from female plants.
