Police presence could spark ‘panic overdoses’ of drugs

Police and police dog presence at music festivals could be a driver of high-risk drug behaviours among concertgoers and result in some people panic overdosing, suggests a new Australian study in Drug and Alcohol Review.

Researchers reached their conclusions after receiving input from attendees at six major music festivals in New South Wales from November 2019 to March 2020. Each of the 1,229 participants self-completed an anonymous survey regarding prior and intended drug use, and associated higher-risk behaviours.

Just shy of a third, 30.3 per cent, of concertgoers reported using or planning to use drugs at the festival, with men and those purchasing drugs inside or outside the venue having greater odds of engaging in higher-risk behaviours.
