A routine traffic stop near Wahoo, Nebraska, turned into a record-setting cannabis bust for the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office earlier this week.
Jose Lopez, 36, of California and Rodney Hernandez, 56, of New Mexico, were arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver and taken into custody at Saunders County Correctional Facility.
Nebraska is one of the few remaining U.S. states that has a complete prohibition on cannabis, though that could change next year.
According to the Marijuana Policy Project, advocacy group Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana is working on a 2022 ballot initiative that would potentially end the criminalization of medical cannabis in the state.
Currently, possession of more than a pound of pot is a felony offence that can lead to five years in jail and a US$10,000 ($12,500) fine, per NORML.
