A joint Canadian/U.S. study suggests that social anxiety is positively related to cannabis problems in young adults, although anxiety does not appear to be associated with how often individuals consume weed.

Study results, published online last week in Addictive Behaviors, considered the cannabis use and social anxiety experiences of those aged 18 to 30.
“This meta-analysis supports the idea that there is a complex relation between social anxiety and cannabis outcomes during young adulthood,” write the study authors from the University of Manitoba, York University and Louisiana State University.
