A Texas man’s report to police that someone was stealing his BBQ pit kicked off an investigation that ended with the discovery of 16 stolen vehicles and just shy of 160 kilograms of illicit cannabis.
Reports do not specifically indicate if the cannabis was found in the vehicles or on the property.
Recreational cannabis is illegal in Texas, although the state House green-lit a bill in the spring of 2021 that would lower the criminal penalty for possession of 28 grams or less of weed.
Even so, any amount over 113 grams is treated as a felony, notes information from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). For amounts of 2.3 to 907 kilograms, the lower range reflects the weight of cannabis discovered, the maximum penalty is five to 99 years in prison and a $63,500 fine.
