Cherelle Griner, the wife of Brittney Griner, says she is disheartened and in “complete disbelief” after a Russian court rejected her wife’s appeal last month.
Griner, who was caught entering the country with vape cartridges in her luggage in February, was sentenced in August to nine years in a penal colony.
It’s a sentiment that’s been echoed by everyone from Joe Rogan to U.S. President Joe Biden.
In May the U.S. government classified Griner as “wrongfully detained” and following her original sentencing in August, U.S. President Joe Biden called on Russia to “release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates.”
In August, Joe Rogan discussed Griner’s case on his hugely popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, calling her imprisonment “horrific” and adding that “no one should be in jail for weed.”
