Tomb raiders: Two people arrested for hiding cannabis at gravesite

Indian police have arrested two drug schemers arrested for reportedly hiding illegal cannabis inside tombs at a gravesite.

When police dug up the area in question, they found 28-plus kilograms of weed. Their reported scheme involved sourcing cannabis and then selling it to local pedlars.

India’s Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 prohibits the production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transport, warehouse, use, consumption, import or export of drugs, including cannabis.

The act states the Central Government is free to take “all such measures as it deems necessary or expedient” to prevent use and trafficking to combat abuse of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Penalties for possessing cannabis depend on the amount seized, namely small, more than small, but less than commercial, and commercial. For the last, prison terms will be at least 10 and as many as 20 years.
