U.K. study finds evidence of a possible ‘gateway effect’ from legal to illegal drugs

A new study out of the U.K. suggests that consumption of legal substances such as tobacco and alcohol could up the chance of subsequently consuming illegal drugs (at least in most parts of the world) like cannabis.

Published in Addiction, the University of Bristol researchers found evidence for a possible gateway effect between tobacco use and subsequent alcohol and cannabis use, cannabis use and subsequent tobacco use and opioid dependence and subsequent alcohol consumption.

“Testing of the gateway hypothesis reveals that smoking initiation may lead to increased alcohol consumption, cannabis use and cannabis dependence. Cannabis use may also lead to smoking initiation and opioid dependence
