Americans believe that smoking marijuana is more morally acceptable than porn, gay relationships, or abortion. This is according to a new survey released by Gallup.
Growing acceptance of marijuana use
According to the poll released on Tuesday, there’s a growing acceptance of cannabis use among Americans, as evidenced by more states opting to legalize recreational or medical cannabis in their jurisdictions.
Out of every ten people who undertook the Gallup survey, seven agreed that using cannabis is morally acceptable. Only 28 percent said smoking marijuana is morally unacceptable. This is a significant increase compared to the 2018 survey when 65 percent of the respondents said cannabis use is morally acceptable.
On the same note, Americans consider wearing animal fur (54%), teenage sex (38%), human cloning (12%), and the death penalty (54%) as less morally acceptable than using cannabis.
Similar to what took place in the past surveys, there was a divide among people with different political affiliations. Liberalists were more likely to consider cannabis use as morally acceptable at 83 percent compared to conservatives at 51 percent.
Even so, it’s still clear from the figures that even a majority of those who identify themselves as conservative Americans do believe there’s nothing morally wrong with cannabis use. The trend is consistent with voting on cannabis legalization.
According to a Gallup survey released in 2019, sixty-six percent of respondents said they support ending marijuana criminalization. The survey included 51 percent of self-reported Republicans and 76 percent of Democrats.
Unlicensed Cannabis in BC Brought in $1.24B in 2019
In related cannabis news, unlicensed cannabis production facilities in Canada’s British Columbia province generated $1.24 billion in revenue. This is according to Statistics supplied by the province.
The figure was about one-third more than that of licensed producers, which stood at $765 million. However, licensed producers brought in almost $600 million more than what it did in 2018. The government of B.C. has been working to regulate the cannabis industry in the province.
In a recent interview with Global News, B.C.’s Minister for Jobs and Economic Development Michelle Mungall acknowledged that the legal market was not expected to overtake the legal market in such a short span of time.
What we all understood would happen is that there would be a transition. People would want to be moving into the legal market and that is exactly what we are seeing in B.C., but they need help to do that and so we are here to provide that, Mungall said.
